What is a bike shed?

A bike shed is a free shared bike parking compound located near the entrance of key transport interchanges. It has the capacity for parking 20-50 bicycles at a time, depending on the size of the shed.

Who can use bike sheds?

Anybody with a linked Opal card can use a bike shed. Bike sheds are installed to make it more convenient to ride a bike to an interchange and catch public transport.

How do I access a bike shed?

Before you can park your bike in a bike shed, you need to register:

  1. Go to 'Sign up' and enter your details
  2. You'll be sent an email with a link to follow to complete your registration
  3. Once you're registered, select 'Link Opal card' under Opal Access Bike Sheds
  4. Enter your Opal card number and accept the bike shed terms and conditions
  5. Click on 'Update Opal card'.

Once your Opal card is linked, you can use it to access any bike shed at any convenient location. Please allow five (5) minutes for your shed access to be activated. Then simply tap on the electronic card reader to enter and exit a bike shed.

Do I need an Opal card with activated bike shed access to exit a bike shed?

Yes, you need an Opal card with activated bike shed access to tap out and exit the bike shed as there is an electronic reader installed inside all bike sheds. This is to reduce unauthorised access and tail-gating. Link your Opal card now and accept the bike shed terms and conditions. Please allow five (5) minutes for your shed access to be activated.

What do I do if I have trouble entering or exiting a bike shed?

If you have trouble entering or exiting a bike shed, please call 131 500.

How do I use the horizontal bike rack system at Waterloo Metro Station?

Horizontal racks are available in bike sheds along the M1 line, including Waterloo Station.
If you're new to using these racks please refer to the manufacturer's instructions, or videos on how to use the lower and upper level racks.

How much does it cost to use a bike shed?

Bike sheds are free of charge. You can access any bike shed as long as you have a linked Opal card. No cash will be deducted from your Opal account.

Is there a bike shed near me?

TfNSW is progressively installing bike sheds at key transport interchanges. See if there's one near you.

How do you decide where to put bike sheds?

It's an ongoing process. Bike shed and bike locker locations are determined based on customer demand.

Can I make a suggestion for a new bike shed?

If you would like to suggest additional facilities at either existing or new locations, please email us with the following details:

  • Transport interchange
  • Your name
  • Your address
  • Contact phone number
  • Contact email address

Can I access a bike shed if I already hire a bike locker?

Yes, you can access a bike shed at no additional cost if you already hire a bike locker. Simply link your Opal card. and agree to the terms and conditions. Please allow five (5) minutes for your shed access to take effect.

If you would like to transfer from a bike locker to a bike shed, just follow the steps below:

  1. Log in to your account and go to 'My Account'.
  2. Select 'Opal Access Bike Sheds'
  3. Add your Opal card number
  4. Accept the bike shed terms and conditions
  5. Click on 'Update Opal card'.
  6. Then cancel your bike locker hire by going to 'Locker Hires' and clicking on the 'Terminate' button next to your locker.

Any remaining hire period of your bike locker will be refunded to you minus a two (2) month withholding fee as per the bike locker terms and conditions.

Is my bike safe inside a bike shed?

Bike sheds are generally installed in areas of high visibility with CCTV surveillance and all-night lighting.

They are accessed electronically only by customers once they link their Opal card number on this website.

Bike racks are provided inside the sheds, and bikes must be locked to a rack with your own bike lock at all times as part of the bike shed terms and conditions.

However, there is no guarantee against theft or vandalism of your bike or property inside a bike shed. TfNSW is not liable and will not reimburse the loss or damage of any property kept inside bike sheds. If you are planning to park expensive bikes and equipment inside a bike shed, we recommend that you add these items to your personal insurance cover.

What happens if my bike or property is stolen or damaged inside a bike shed?

There is no guarantee against theft or vandalism of your bike or property inside a bike shed. TfNSW is not liable and will not reimburse the loss or damage of any property kept inside bike sheds. If you are planning to park expensive bikes and equipment inside a bike shed, we recommend that you add these items to your personal insurance cover.

Please report any theft or vandalism to police before contacting TfNSW, and assist with any investigations or court action.

What do I do if my Opal card is lost or stolen?

You must report any lost or stolen Opal card as soon as you become aware of it. Please advise TfNSW Bike Locker Administration by calling 131 500 or emailing bike.locker@transport.nsw.gov.au if you have reported your Opal card lost or stolen to Opal Customer Care and delete your Opal card number from the Transport Bike Parking website immediately.
You must not allow anybody else to use your Opal card to access a bike shed.

I've got a new Opal card. How do I update my bike shed access details?

To update the Opal card linked to your bike shed access:

  1. Log in to your account and go to 'My Account'
  2. Select 'Opal Access Bike Sheds'
  3. Remove/delete your old Opal card number, then click 'Update Opal card'
  4. Add your new Opal card number, accept the bike shed terms and conditions, and click 'Update Opal card'.

Note: you can only have one Opal card linked to your bike shed access at any time.
